Fished the Derby this past weekend. Tryed the river Saturday. A mistake. Should have been where I was Sunday. Lots of fish in the river, but all of them seem to be lip locked. Guess we need a little rain and maybe they will get a little loose? Anyway fished the Sound Sunday. Launched in Everett. Figured it would be a mess, but it was a quick in. Way to go Port guys. Kept the line moving. Left the dock in the dark, so it wasn't a real fast run down. Still dark when I got to Mukeltio. Started fishing right past the ferry dock. The launch there looked like a mess. Trolled to just about Shipwreck before we had a strike. Lost that one. Crossed into 9 and my buddy got a fish. As soon as that happened We started hitting them. Nobody within a quarter mile of me at least. I lost three and caught two. My buddy lost one and caught another. His two were respectable ten pounders. Mine a bit smaller. Five and seven, but hey it's fish. He had to decide which of the two to enter in the Derby. They were near identical. The one he checked in weighed about 10 and a half. We were back on the dock a little after nine after stopping to say high to another friend in the big flotilla closer to Mukeltio. Afterwards he moved down to were I had been and limited out quick also. What a great day and I was home in time for a late breakfast then headed back for the Derby awards. Hope the fish are still sitting there for me Friday. Eighty feet seems to be the spot for me and I'm liking these ace high flies in purple.
