Took the day off and considered making an overnighter with a ferry run to Sekui, but with fishing here so hot, figured it would be easier to stick around. Headed out from Mukilteo at 7am.

Today the morning was SLOOOWWWW. Plenty of downtime with little action, a lot harder fishing than in weeks past. Couldn't figure out where the fish were, and at what depth, tried new depth on each rod every 10 minutes. Then about 10AM? my friend Reggie released from the rigger to check on his bait. About 15 reels up, he realizes he caught a fish on the way up - problem is - don't know how deep. It starts peeling out line - it was a big one, he thought it acted like a King. It was a monster 12 or 13 pound Coho, twice as big as the other fish caught today. That was all we had for quite some time until the fog lifted.

We were using an Ace-Hi Fly, Mother-of-Pearl color, cream with green, red, purple tensel and red eyes. With herring strip. We had one for each rod, until something snapped one off. It was the only thing the fish wanted, nothing else got bites.

Later in the afternoon, watched some veteran fisherman yank one up, asked them how deep. Replied = 50 feet. Thanks guys, that is what we needed - guys there ARE plenty of fish in the sea, don't be selfish with the information - everybody wins, plus it is good karma. We had consistant luck doing a wide loop to the middle of the channel in front of the 6 + 1 condos just south of shipwreck, in about 40 - 60 ft down in ~500 feet of water. Mostly caught when heading East- West.

Got our 2 limits finally by 2:30PM - a long day's work, but great fun. Tomorrow with a replacement Ace High, and our loop pattern figured out, we expect to finish off a lot sooner.

My wonderful wife Sarah, skilled chef, prepared one fillet perfectly for dinner - nothing but a few nibbles remained on a bare salmon skin!

Agree with freak. That's a chum. Did the same thing myself a few weeks ago. Didn't realize it until the fish checker pointed it out back at the ramp. Thankfully, there was not a gamey present to write me a ticket. Lesson learned.

Thanks for the pointers guys - we were actually North and South of Shipwreck all day - it looks like it was legal to retain North of Shipwreck, and with the fog so thick he may have actually been ok? But not our intention to break rules - now that we realize the Chum are in there, will keep a better eye out when in area 9 (chums are ok Oct 1). By the way, it did fight more than a Coho and took line out, he initially thought it might be a King. Once he saw the spot free tail, thought it was a Coho. Honestly looking at the ID in the regs, it looked more like a Coho to me, fatish tail, tall not skinny like the illustration - there must be something about the pic that is the give away. What is the easy way to tell the two apart when they are dime bright?

the chum has this very faint striped side, even chrome bright like this one. As they hit fresh water it gets more obvious. Also, no prominent black spots on back or tail. They are a riot to catch in the salt, bigger ones realy scream the line out.
