I went out to Grayland to go razor clamming for the first time this year. Low tide was about 8:10 pm, so it was a night dig. I arrived around 4:00 and surf perch fished until dark. I had no bait so I picked up some 2 inch berkley gulp baby shrimp. I had never tried them. They were as effective as natural baits. I caught two average sized ones in about 40 minutes, and the surf was pretty rough. With the price of the plastics though, I think I'll just have them as a backup for when I run out of bait in future trips!
At any rate, I got my limit (15) of clams, but digging conditions were poor. It was rainy and windy; a storm was rolling in, so the shows weren't great. But you could get into patches of them pounding the ground near the surf line as the waves receeded. I had my limit by 7:00 which was great because the weather was getting lousier as the night progressed. The size of clams varied quite a bit-- four or five were quite small, hence the four stars.
