A coworker and I went squid jigging Tuesday night before the rains came back. We got one (really small) squid in two-plus hours. The squidding was very slow over all, but it was one of those nights where I just had a skunk on my back for some reason. There was one five minute productive flash off the front of the pier, but they would have nothing to do with my usually productive jigs. I also managed to accidentally break off a jig for the first time. It was still a good trip though as my coworker and I have been talking about going fishing together for over a year and half, and it was his first squid (and it beats doing chores at home)!

One seasoned veteran on the pier (he seems to be there every time I've been there) said he thinks the season has peaked and is winding down. I don't know if that's the case, but I think that's a fine excuse for my skunk.

The season ends by mid January, I seldom catch reasonable number after that, and I normally just give up. Some people tell me that there's a short season mid spring, I have never tried... however, they told me it was mainly small squids. Jumbo squids (10-12 inches) sometimes show up in early October (not every year) and on mid December.
