We decided to do some halibut fishing during our annual Fort Worden family reunion. We launched the boat at the park and ran out to fish between Point Wilson and Protection Island. We put some time in on Friday and had a few small nibbles on the bait, but no butts. We were fishing large hoochies with squid or herring. The current was pretty fast, so the fishing was a little tough.

Saturday, I took my daughter out to try again. We decided to throw some jigs on and try around some rocks for lings and my daughter ended up catching a beautiful Copper Rockfish. We were only in fifty feet, so release was no problem. We switched to butt gear after the current started up with no luck. Just need to put in more time to finally get one of these monsters. I did find a few good rocks to mark on my charts* as a no halibut drift spot. Nothing like fighting the current after a hangup trying to get your gear back up.

*As a side note, my new Navionics app for my iPhone worked great for navigation and finding depths. I have Puget Sound and US lakes on it. Seems to be fairly accurate. A few lakes I would like are missing, but most stuff I need is there.
