Met up with first time caller, long time listener... NE 1 Fission from this website. We got to the launch about 0640. It was a beautiful blue sky day, water was very calm that early. Our intention was to drop 4 crab pots, and then do some salmon trolling while they soaked. Even though Kings open on Tues. I thought the launch would be fuller due to Coho and crabs, but it was only 1/3 full parking.
We headed over to around Carkeek Park area to drop pots. Usually a good area for me. Of course there was a TON of pots out there. I always go around 80' of water. After a couple of pulls we had only 6 keepers. They were all just squeaking by on the size limit. Pots were FULL of males, but very very small this year.
At the end it turned out that we could not find the final pot after a great search. Very frustrating as it means another interruption to family, to come out again the next day to search. I had just bought two new pots this week, so $$ investment.
(Side note.... next day found the missing pot. I had got my thinking turned around. We had put it in a different place. Anyway, after an all night soak in different spot, this pot was STACKED with crab. Two full limits in this one, plus extra crab. My buddy on Sunday could not find his license, so I kept one limit, and the others back to the bottom) All of these crabs were the usual decent 7" size.

Now for the highlight. I don't salmon fish very often from my boat. Sort of feel like a rookie, always have to read up on things like leader length, etc. etc. We are dragging Green Pro Troll flashers, and spoons, chartreuse and cop car colors. I picked up a small prob resident coho. larger than a shaker, but still small fish. Then at one point NE 1 Fission gets a HARD take down. Rod is jamming the water's edge. He is dealing with this, and I immediately get a fish on as well. We get both fish to boat side, mine is mellower, just staring at me. HIs on the other hand is making hard runs around the prop etc. We boat his, and it turns out to be a King. Fish is released (King opener Tues.) Unfortunately I was trying to keep tension on mine, but it came off while I waited for the net.
Great time on the water, and great to gain confidence in this salmon thing. No worries NE 1 Fission... it was all worth it to me. Nice hanging out with ya.

Double header of Kings....Nice! Be aware that is illegal to bring a fish aboard your boat (over the gunwhale) if it is not legal to keep the fish. You have to release it outside the boat.

Ive fished shipping lanes last few days for silvers on the low tide change. Have got 4 silvers first day and 2 kings,and yesterday 3 silvers and a king.And lost many others, Mini flashers ,mini splatter back hoochie uv pink or green glow.herring tipped.Most of the resident silvers are eating krill, i fish the tides rips in all the crap floating out there get em every time. a few of the ones yesterday were 5-6lb,every time you find em your get a double header.90-1110ft of cable ,tide was in afternoon. 2 hrs b4 slack 2 hrs after.Also saw some schools of pinks milling around on surface.My guess is we hooked some of those to but lost ,i troll at about 3 mph for silvers give or take ,pinks mouths are pretty soft,cause we lost a bunch .

Oops! I just had to delete my comment response for Jungle Jim. I had left it up there for a couple hours, before I read that I mis-typed... I said I was pretty experienced with salmon identification. WRONG. I meant to say that I was INexperienced with salmon ID. It has been easiest for me to identifiy the Kings by the clearly blackmouth. That is why it came in the boat to see the mouth.
Thank you for the reminder that out of season fish need to stay in the water even for identifying. ( I will have to bone up on better ID ways than the mouth)

Quad, thanks again, had a blast, Jungle Jim, props to the heads up!! Beautiful clear day, could used more crab/salmon, but always nice to be out there. Quad, thanks again for writing your report,...maybe next time we can go in with 2 limits of each,...

Hey Quad, as long as every time you hit the water you gain experience you are doin' good. Myself on the other hand, feel like lately I'm scratching my head all too often trying to figure it out . LOL Glad you found your pot. Thanks for the report.

I completely understand the misidentification thing. We were out last week and brought a fish about 4.5 to 5lbs. to the boat. I was convinced it was a blackmouth, but my brother was sure it was a silver. We took a better look at it and it WAS a silver (not a Pink - confirmed by the fish checker). Even silvers have a little bit of black on the mouth sometimes and it's hard to tell unless you have picture or something to compare. No big deal that you brought the fish in the boat, I just thought I'd let you know so you don't get surprised by a ticket from "the man". Good luck to all.
