Tough day for me again on the salt and even worse for the Tin Cup! Had 2 guys scheduled to go with me today but they had to bail at the last minute; I was so excited to get the Tin Cup out after replacing my trailer lights with LED ones and having put in a new fuel pump on the sizzler (which was running great in the driveway) couldn't wait to get it out this AM.
Hit the Pt. Defiance launch at 5:30 and with just the trolling motor, went over to start my troll along Owens beach. Started out with an Irish cream coho killer and worked my way to the clay banks. The plan was to work through tide change and then motor over to Browns point, Dash and Redondo to get my limit for sure today! After an unsuccessful troll got into the rips at the Clay banks and put on a crippled herring and jigged for a while but again, no luck. 8am and it's tide change so put the coho killer back on and was going to troll back to the slag pile and then motor over to Browns point. Just as i was passing the picnic area my rod starts to dance in the holder! Yea! I pop it off the clip and turns out to be a fiesty 4lb pink. 1 down, 3 to go!!
As I get back to the ferry area decide it's time to make my way over to Browns point so go to start the Sizzler and hear a loud pop inside the engine and it's starts running weird and then I see oil and smoke coming out of the housing so shut her off and take off the cover only to see a quarter size whole in my engine block where all the oil and gas are spewing out of. Uh oh! This is not good! So still in search of my limit I fire up the Yamaha kicker and make my way to Browns Point. Took about 25 minutes but I arrive around 9:30 and start trolling a small white flasher and pink coho killer and start trolling north. As I round the lighthouse I see about 10 boats anchored up and another 10 or so trolling. Finally I anchor up in about 20 feet of water on the very far north side of the beach and see some guys on the bank landing fish so start throwing my 2" pink buzz bomb with hootchie skirt towards shore. I get a hit and it starts jumping out of the water and peeling line! Much bigger then my 1st one and as I get it close to the boat I make the mistake of getting my tip to close the the jig and as I reach for the net it does an alligator roll and off the hook it goes! Dang I hate losing fish!
Anyway, watched the boat next to me lose a couple at the boat too before getting one in and now it's about 1:30 and I have a long trip back and of course a south wind has picked up and put a chop on the water so start my trip back on the kicker motor. This time takes me about 45 minutes and get back to the launch about 2:15pm but once again am impressed with how they run that boat launch as someone is there to tell you what lane to go to and was out of the water by 2:30 with only one fish and one dead motor!
Hope to see you on the water soon! lol
