Fished five days 9/16-20/2013. Caught 5 Kings 17-30+lbs and 7 coho 2-10 lbs. Had 2-3 folks in the boat each day. Fishing was not as good for us as in past years; but all except 1 king was 20 lbs or over :o). Fished the South Channel, launched out of Johns River. What a nightmare getting on and off the launch, real zoo most days. Gary Larson/Mad Magazine type experiences....
Took a number of the kings and coho on a home made inline spinner of beads and a large chrome spinner blade in front of a green or blue label plug herring on a double hook rigging. Also used Brads super lures and plug cut herring behind Big Al's fish flashes. Gator Aide green or half/half greens seemed to work best. Best fish taken on a red flash with a red snubber. Most fish taken without a snubber.
Fish seemed to be lower in the Bay this year. No hits above the water tower. Too bad, liked going up there to get away from the crowds and still having quality fishing. Probably would have caught more fish had we given up on the upper troll earlier. Most action was 1/2 way between the towers down to the goal post.
Despite conventional wisdom and what you'll read in most how to blogs we took 11 or the 12 fish trolling against the current 1-2 hours before to 1-2 hours after flood or ebb tide. We did try trolling with the current with little luck. I guess I still a lot to learn.
Good trip, folks had fun, despite the weather predications the weather was ok except for the wind that put a chop on the water every afternoon, missed out on fishing Sat due to inaccurate weather perdition forecasting the front coming in that didn't show up till Sun. By then WDFW has emergency closed the fishery to protect unmarked kings.
