Sometimes plans just don’t go the way you hope they will…

After seeing salmonbarry’s nice Chico report I decided to explore this fishery as I’d never been there before and hadn’t really thought about fishing it from a boat. So after talking Gringo Pescador into using his boat, we got together Tony and Bigbass Dez for an expedition. Gringo and I were in particular hoping to get Dez into a chum and watch him have to deal with 10-15 pounds of angry dog on a bass rod, LOL!

Anyway, after organizing the trip the next day salmonbarry reported the bay had been heavily netted, ouch. What to do now? We decided, check the place out, if no nets, give it a try. Plus, HT was at 12:30, perfect for fishing, right? Wrong. I misread the tide table, HT was 12:30 last week. Today it was at 4pm. Meaning our plan to fish from 9am to 1pm put us fishing at LT, 11am. Just the opposite of what I was expecting. Again, ouch. To make it worse, I didn’t realize my mistake until after we were on the water.

The old adage a bad day of fishing is better than work I believe in, but this is the weekend. Anyway, we were there, and no nets, so we motored over to Chico creek and anchored. We used all manner of chum gear including herring, anchovies, jigs, prawns, spinners, and corkies. Net result – two starry flounder and one solid float take-down that was missed. I’m not saying who. :-)

There were fish to be had, they just weren't biting. Dez enjoyed watching the arial exploits of the chum. We saw one guy practicing the art of dragging fish in by the tail, he was quite good at it having multiple hook-ups. Decided we didn't want to teach Dez any bad habits so avoided that style of fishing.

It was windy, rainy, cold, then sunny, then repeat cycle. But it was four friends hanging out together, fishing, so it was a nice day. Thanks to Gringo for letting us us his boat, and for BBQing lunch. Nice fishing with you again Tony. And Dez, well, we still want to get you into some chum action!

Sorry to hear that Mike! I should have suggested launching at Potlatch and hitting Hoodsport as that should have been good but crowded. Anyway, now you know what it's like if it picks up again or even for next year!

It's always an adventure! I will say on a day like today that BBQ was worth it's weight in gold. Those brats were hot and tasty! - I am glad we went and will have to keep this on the calendar for next year. OH and it wasn't me that missed that bobber down...

We had considered Hoodsport but decided with no nets to give it a shot. Hoodsport may have been better but I have been there on days when the bite was dead as well even with a ton of fish. You buy your ticket and takes your chances...
I like exploring new places and may even try to get back there in my boat in the next 1-2 weeks.
