This report starts on the 18th, We started out the weekend by clamming on the beach at Grayland. I wanted my wife's first clam trip to be perfect so before we left Spokane I built two clam guns, hers was just the perfect height for her and I drilled the air holes at the perfect spots for her thumbs, what could be better? Well we started seeing shows and we could hardly push the heavy guns into the sand and when we did get one down over a clam the suction didn't hold good enough and they were very hard to pull back out. No clams Friday but we did go to the store and buy new guns. After all that was done we launched the boat and headed out for some crabbing just outside the harbor. We got out to buoy 8 and dropped 4 pots loaded with chicken, after a 2 hour soak we pulled the pots and had about 30 crab but only 4 were keepers. Several were 5-51/5" but back in they went. We re-baited and left the pots overnight. Saturday we went back out all set up the proper way for clamming but the wind was blowing about 20-30 mph and it was raining bucket loads, shows were very hard to see. After about 2 hours we and 20 nice clams so we to the motel hooked up the boat and headed out to check out our crab pots. The coast guard stopped by at the boat ramp to let us know that the 4 ft swells we were about to go into would be 19 ft swells in about 2 hours. We made a fast dash out to our pots but only 2 out of 4 were still there, we pulled those and not a keeper in either one so we rushed back into the harbor loaded up and headed for the motel to plan the next part of the weekend. Sunday we went back to Grayland beach he weather was nicer but the surf was so high that it would run up the beach a hundred yards at times, hardly anybody was seeing shows. We heard of a women that was over come by a wave and knocked unconscious. We messed around about 4 hours and wound up with 16 clams. We got back to Westport and stopped by our favorite charter boat office to visit with old friends, they said they had two boats headed out Monday for bottom fish One of the boats we had been on before and will never go out on it again(the name starts with SLA), but the other boat I knew the captain but had just never fished with him so we booked the trip on the PB2. Monday morning the bar was not friendly but with a good captain it was a safe trip. We had 14 ft swells at 15 seconds so it was rolling but not real choppy. With only 6 people on the boat I thought it would be a fast trip but was I ever wrong. It took us all day to get 60 rock fish and no lings at all. But it was still a lot of fun, the captain and deckhand were both outstanding to fish with. Overall a very good weekend 4 crab(and only lost 2 pots), two meals of clams and 40 rock fish fillets, and the orange Hewes is not a salt water virgin and more.
