Thanks to a buddy from this site and his report last week I decided to take the family to the Grayland Beach fishing area to try for some surf perch. We started out by pulling some sand shrimp out of the mud flats at low tide and then started fishing for the surf perch after getting some. Within 10 minutes of fishing my son Michael who was visiting us from Indianapolis landed the biggest fish of the day, a nice 2 lb plus perch! We were using a combination of cut shrimp and nightcrawlers and sand shrimp for bait. We caught several others but most were too small so we only took two fish home. Still it was a great time for the family and a beautiful day to boot!

Sounds like a blast, wish I lived closer to give it a try. Maybe on my next camping trip out that way I will have to give it a try. Great job!!

We rigged our gear with a one ounce cannonball at the end followed by two size 6 hooks spread about 12 inches apart with the bottom hook about 18 inches above the cannonball. Cast out as far as you can in the surf and let it sit for about a minute. If you don't get any hits, move the bait slowly along the bottom about 2 or 3 feet. Keep doing this for about 4 or 5 times, you should get a bite if they are around. Hope that helps!

A couple other tips that have worked well for me...I personally use 2 ounces. Gets me down quicker, and keeps me in the zone longer. I use a cannonball if I'm doing a sliding Carolina rig, or a pyramid if I'm running a drop shot. See this thread for good tips on rigging for perch.
