OK a few days late, but I just joined. Here is the report for my charter trip out of Westport, a combo bottom fish and salmon excursion on a 6 man boat.
We motored out about 5:45 crossed the bar and headed north in the fog somewhere, stopped at the first bottom fishing location and we were pretty consistently hooking up with one or two fish at a time. the bite slowed a bit, with 19 sea bass in the hold. We then motored up to the next location and things got crazy, it was constant action with a couple lines brining in two fish at once (on the upper fly and lower anchovy). We were using a live anchovy with a fly (hootchie sort of thing) up the line a couple feet. that quickly got us to our limit of 50.
We then switched over to whole herring (green label I think) and it was "fish on" as a soon as the lines hit the water (same spot we were bottom fishing). All five lines had fish within a couple minutes, a couple were sea bass that were sent back. The one king that made it to the boat was small by about 1/4"! The other got loose right at the boat.
The bite did not slow down and the boat limited by 1:00. We hit a few areas for lings on the way back, but no takers.
I only gave it a 4 since we did not get any kings in the boat, but the fishing could not have been any hotter. So I am still waiting for the first chinook ever. Maybe later this week at Buoy 10.
