Beginning to get an itch for Coho after seeing a spike in their presence in the sound this past week. Caught the 7:00 AM ferry out of Mukilteo and headed for Possession Pt. Enjoy the fishery there, fishing live herring under a float. Arrived at the point about 8:00, fishing by 8:45. Low tide at 7:30, so fished the incoming tide all day long. Strong east wind from the outset, very unusual... blew a ton of eel grass into the area and made fishing very difficult. Owner of the bait company told me that fishing has been picking up, especially in the afternoon, just after the tide starts going out. Only four fishermen on the beach... saw two fish caught the first three hours, then it was my turn. Had two take downs on the float earlier (left me with tooth marks on my bait)... in the mean-time I had caught a half dozen stag-horn sculpins, a surf perch and a red rock crab. At about 11:00, my float went straight down and before I could react, popped straight back up... disappointed, I stared at the float and was maybe ten seconds later when the float dis-appeared under the surface again... this time I was ready, set the hook and it was "fish on". Strong runs, a couple of big splashes on the surface, then the most difficult part, beaching the fish through fifty pounds of eel grass that had wrapped around my line. Finally able to get the fish on the beach, a beautiful hatchery hen of about 4# (weighed in at 3#, 10 oz. on my digital scale, at home after being bled and degilled). I had two more fish on briefly in the afternoon, but each one came off after ripping through a floating mass of eel grass that was stationed out front all day long... barb-less hooks don't help the situation! The east wind had stirred up the bottom, and we were fishing it stained water most of the day. Wind changed to southerly about 2:00, but still had to deal with tons of eel grass out front. Many more fishermen showed up about 3:00. Saw a total of six fish caught all day, including mine.
Had some real excitement about 4:00, when we watched an aircraft carrier move through the sound in front of us. About ten minutes later we all had to scramble off the beach as a veritable tsunami pounded the beach over and over, washing far above the high-tide mark. Very impressive, the amount of water that huge ship moves as it cruises out to sea! Left the beach at 5:00. Pretty good day for my first trip out this season... more to come! PTL!
