Went out of Westport on one of Charters, with 20 eager folks. I was concerned about the predicted 21 mph wind gusts but figured it would be OK. It was a rock and roll day with swells up to 10feet? I'm guessing, with bad chop on top of that.

Headed north about an hour and made quick work on sea bass limits. However, the calm Pacific (not today) was taking it's toll on folks. I hate to see people get sick, and there were 3-4 that were out of commission before we started fishing.

We moved not far and tried our luck on Lingcod and 4-5 more folks that fell to the calm Pacific before got to the lingcod hole. For those still standing, we had to work, but got our lingcod limits.

We finally hit the docks about 5pm with bass and ling limits for the boat. In this aspect, it was a great day of fishing, however, my two partners fell to the power of the sea that day, along with about half the boat, and there ain't no getting off once the boat leaves the dock.

One of my partners that came around after hitting the dock noticed other boats and a lot of fish near empty fish bags. We picked a very good boat and Captain.

Fishing was a 5 star day. I rated it as a 4 only due to the number of casualties of the sea. Just some advice if you do Westport; No matter how tough you think you are, Mother Nature can be tougher. Take Dramamine the night before, or some other patch or whatever, and take another the morning about an hour before leaving the docks. Try and get a decent nights sleep. Eat light in the morning, but have something in your stomach like a piece of fruitcake, zucchini bread, or peanut butter sandwich. If you do get sick, try chew on some crackers or chips and drink a little water.

Ended up packaging up 25 nice meals for 2 of bass and ling. Didn't get any pics. Nice fish, but no derby fish. Saw one brute ling on the scales and maybe 35 lbs? I'll have to check the weekly Westport derby site to see what that fish weighed. Enjoy.

Charter Captain should have canceled the trip. He knew that their would be lots of casualties with that forecast. Dangerous too.

What boat did you go out on? I gotta say, as a nephew of a charter captain, I doubt very much they would go out in unsafe weather. Rough weather, sure, but not unsafe. If a client was uncomfortable due to weather, rebooking at a later date usually was not to big of deal.

About weather. It was rough, but obviously not risky or unsafe enough to not get out. I don't know if any boats cancelled but it was touch and go. It was just a tough one. I checked weather at 3am and expected wind gust up to 21mph. The CPT just made a passing comment while smiling with limits for everyone when we were in that he didn't think we'd do very good fishing or that he didn't know how it was going to be. I'd take this boat again anytime. Great CPT and crew. Seeing sick folks is hard to take and hope folks don't give up on fishing if that happens. I fish Westport a few times a year and rarely know a time that at least one person didn't fair well. Just a very long and tough trip but got 25lbs of nice fillets.

The only thing I would say is the ocean isn' t for everyone unfortunately. I agree with the precautions you can take. I have never been sick but my dad has when he doesn't get good rest and food on his stomach. A big boat can be more comfortable on a rough day, so keep this in mind when booking if you think you will struggle with motion sickness. Just one more thing, I have had the most success on days that were not real "calm"
