Went up to Sekiu to test newest trolling/bucktailing flies on coho. Saturday, on the water at dawn and motored out to 200+ feet of water. Primarily fished perpendicular to the shore to have flies going across the tidal flow. In the early AM we long line trolled using fly rods with 225 grain sink tips, 10' leader 12# monofilament. Speed about 2.0 to 3.75 mph. Depending on speed, the flies were 0 to 3 feet below the surface. No flashers only Wiggle Fin Action Discs to animate the flies.
On Saturday the best color was fluorescent pink/orange/pearl. Green/chartreuse/pearl also got hit. Hot colors got the most attention on Saturday.
In the morning there were a few fish spotted jumping or breaking the surface. As the day wore on and the sun got high the fish went deeper. We put the fly lines on down riggers. We were bit at 20' and as deep as 45' later in the day.
Total: 5 fish brought to boat and released, about 5 fish lost after being on briefly. Not "hot" action but enough to keep us out all day with a hamburger break mid-day at the cafe in town.
The fish were small, 3 to 4 pounds with a dink or two. The rumor/speculation is that these were out bound fish. The big silvers are still out at Neah Bay and beyond. Conclusion: we need to go back.
Lots of boats on the water. Boat launch went quickly.
