WOW! what else is there to say about last night! I guess the third time is a charm.. fished the bowl and pitcher rapids for two days using spinners and spoons in the heat of the day with no luck, just 5-6 lost lures. still determined to pull a fish out i went back last night armed with some old nightcrawlers. I had rigger my pole very simple, spool of 6 lb line with a 4 lb leader tied on about 4 feet. a number 12 debarred hook on the end held my half night crawlers. (Please de-barb your hooks if fishing hear. the fish are not safe to eat so releasing them with the least harm is very important. let these guys grow to be MONSTERS.)
I really think the key to fishing the bowl and pitcher is being able to read the water and find the fish. My method was to cast into the current and let the bait float downstream naturally along the eddy lines (swirly area between the main current and the back flowing current) and then add some tension and let the worm float into the edge of the eddy, where i would slowly twitch and reel it back to my position. I got my first fish on my third cast, and in the next 15 minutes pulled out two more fish from the same spot. I then decided to go across the bridge and try the deep pool and fast current on river left. I got 2 there in about 10 minutes and headed back to the other side again. This is when it got good. I had 4 casts, 4 fish. Then after a few tries with no bites i hooked a killer rainbow. He fought very strong pulling drag many times. when i got him to the rock i was fishing from (a precarious perch were my balance was key i realized he was about 16 inches and very thick. nice fish.
All in all i lost 0 hooks due to snags and caught 11 fish in about 2 hours. Ill def be back for more, but i think next time i will travel further downstream and look for a new hole. I feel i have conquered the bowl and pitcher, but it took three days to do it!
Also of interest to some of you, i did observe a hatch occur. it was a light colored insect that looked like a small moth. Sorry my insect ID skills are still lacking. Very little surface activity though.
