Sorry, no offense, but I refuse to believe any report of a 20 pound buck in mid February unless i see a pic. I don't think people realize how rare a 20 pound steelhead is.

I would agree with Tyler. You need to be careful throwing that 20lb word around when it comes to steelhead, those are very rare and true trophy fish even on the peninsula. I'm glad you caught a sweet fish but unless it was measured for length and girth and no photo i'll be skepticle. As far as 20lb fish in mid February goes i have seen them on the Hoh and Sol Duc in february,but i have been drift boating on the Peninsula for nearly 30 years so i've seen alot of Steelhead.

I did not have a scale I mean it was not a long fish but it was built plus I had no scale or tape on i was not thinking I would catch anything. but I would venture to say it was at least 25- 28 inches in length and from back and belly about6 and ahalf to 7 inches. I really do wish I had my camera but my phone was dead other wise I woulkd have taken a pic doesnt help that I in 2004 caught a 54 pound king out of the hole at the mouth of stevens creek and I had no camera. so maybe 15 pounds maybe alittle heavier all I know it was atleast over 12 pounds cause it was hard to lift I had to basically cradle the fish in my arms it was one powerful son of a gun. oh and I have no clue if it was a native he had a lump where the adipose fin was scared so either a hatchery tech did not clip it right or it is a native and a seal or something attack him but he looked like a prime speciem and hope he spawns.

It's all good i'm glad Drifter got his first steelie, either way it sounds like a pig. For me steelhead season is just starting. Mid february into April is the real steelhead season, 6lb brats dont do it for me anymore.

Typically a 25-28 inch steelhead weighs approximately 5-8 lbs. I caught a large steelhead on the Columbia close to the Wallula junction that was 40 inches and weighed 19 lbs and a second fish that day was 32 inches and 12 lbs (Weighed on a certified balance). Fish like the 40 incher are fish of a lifetime for most people. If you want a close weight, there are calculators online that can approximate weight of fish. Measure the length and then the thickest girth around the belly. I need to get up to Lake Erie and go after a few sttelhead, Tons of them run up the rivers here in Ohio in the fall, winter and spring. Keep after those steelhead. It has just begun.

I figure around 32 inches long and a girth of about 17 inches. so Checked that out so I streched it alittle around 15 pounds or so but in my book that is a trophy hump fish I dont hear much of fish over 11 on the hump.

oh and now that i think of it I just looked at picutes of native fish this one was not a native by anymeans the adipos was not even close to being there I really wish it was a native though damn could have had smoked steelhead nuts

what kind of an attrractor were u using? did you use a scent or just the cork and yarn?

only used yarn with a drop of shrimp oil
