I have never fished here, but this was one of my goals for 2009. I was amazed at seeing how many cars that were lined up the river at 5am. I seen hundreds of anglers with headlights on, reminded me of a pack of racoons. I followed my buddy to the farm parking lot. It was just getting light out when we finally trekked to one of his holes. I found a nice spot to practice and get the flow of the etiquette of combat fishing. I was excited and the river was showing promise with several large fish being hooked. None that were landed at this spot were legally caught, but watching the battle was awesome. I kept on telling myself this cast - this cast...The bite did stop and after talking to the more experienced anglers, the fish were holding up at "The Meat Hole." We walked along the bank and looking down we could see numerous large fish swimming near the claybanks toward the camp sites. But no one was hooking up. We settled in above the Meat hole and I witnessed 4 fish being hooked. The 3 that were landed legally were 12-25 pounds. Most everyone on the river was using small corky (black) and some used yarn, some didn't. I was using size 8 corky (too big) and size 2/0 hook with about 8 feet of leader running 14lb main and 14lb leader. I did meet some really nice folks next to me and they said this weekend will be extremely packed and next week the tides are going to be in our favor..

I seriously have never seen a legally hooked king out of there before. There are some really large kings in there though.

Wouldn't you just s*** your pants, if at the first hole you came to, everybody was drifting bobbers with soft ball size egg/shrimp combos, then the next hole all the guys were "punking" and you didn't here one guy ask "how long of a leader are you using."

I did. I have much respect for riverfisherman. There is a technique involved to detect a fish and I am still learning. I am close however. I know some do get lucky and a fish will run into your presentation, but to detect when a fish has your line in their mouth, to set your hook, baffles me. This kind of fishing reminds of when I started fishing with Senko's. I lost plenty of fish that would have my bait in the mouth, swim with it and spit it out. After much trial and error I know when a fish has a hold of my bait. The stereotype for people that fish in rivers is misrepresented. To get a fish in the mouth/head/gill plate and competing with many in the same hole takes skill and technique. I applaud you...

I was there at the farms and log jam hole and there were alot of fish hooked some legal some foul hooked but there were some chromer toads coming out .Whatched a kid come down to the log jam hole and hooked 2 fish in 4 casts lost the first one id say was an easy 25lbs and landed his keeper on the 4th cast and it was in the 30s,both were legaly hooked.I went with 2 buddies and one hooked and lost 3 the other had one on and lost it and i didint hit a fish.Good place for an undercover warden .I fished thursday.

Sorry you didn't have any luck out there Jens. Sounds like quite an experience. I'm sure it's a zoo....and will be worse this weekend! Better luck next time.

Nice rig you were using there. Does it feel good being a flosser? Flossing isn't even considered fishing bud. You should try getting a fish to bite for once.
