SMB and Pike bit is still hot up on the river. Smallies are everywhere! Lots of 2 pounders with one that went almost 4 pounds. 1 or 2 Pike a day is still pretty common also but should keep getting better as it gets later in the year.

Water is low so of you dont know the river I would stay off of it until the water level comes up. Lots of shallow spots even in the middle of the river.

RBF, I was up there that day as well. Sounds like you had a better day than I did. I managed 8 or 10 SMB, but couldn't get the pike to bite. I had about an 8 lber or so follow me to the boat but couldn't talk bhim into biting. The bass were nice though. Most in the 2lb range. Sight fishing them worked for me. They liked to lay in the open between the weedbeds. I got one on a blue and chartruse crankbait and the rest on a 2 1/2" pumpkinseed tube jig. Tons of fun on ultralight. I threw everything at the pike with no luck. Happy Fishing

I was fishing between Newport and Usk. I have been up there 20+ times this year so I move around a lot and fish where I have had success. Sand flats and rocky areas I fish for the Smallies with plastics and the weed edge I fish for the Pike with Spinners.

Scott, I fished south of the bridge at Usk, right where I was the week before and had found fish. When I had no luck there, I moved north of Cusick where I had found fish, and still no pike. The smallies were fun but I was looking for a nice big pike. They should be fattening up for winter, but they didn't like what I had to offer. I even tried your suggestion and threw some white spinnerbaits at them. I did get one pike strike on it, but no hookup. I will be fishing in Hawaii this next week so I won't get after them again till the second weekend in Oct. When that happens, I may be south of Coeurdalene where my brother got into a few nice ones. Happy Fishing

Aj's Dad....I have been fishing North of Cusick. My favorite tactic is a 6-8 inch pearl white suspending X-Rap. I like to stall it and watch it suspend in the clear water. 8 out of 10 times I get to watch the Pike take it. Fun Stuff. We will have to get together soon. My life should slow down mid October. I moved into a home last week and still finishing the basement. Wow Hawaii!
