We got to Forks at about 12PM and proceeded to take the Twilight tour . . . Oh wait, the real reason why we went to Forks . . . Oh Yeah! Steelhead!

We got there and headed down Bogachiel Way towards the rearing ponds and much to our delight the ponds were packed. You could see them jumping in the ponds themselves. Praked and took a look at the creek leading to the ponds and the creek was overflowing with Steelhead, a very good sign! So Ronman and I proceeded down to the river and as you can see by yhe first pic there was a good number of people down there including drift boats. The river was low and clear, not too cold.

This was my first time using a bait casting reel so I spent alot of time learning that lil' bugger. Wasnt catching anything for some time. Noticed that others were. Many guys were leaving with their limit. After several hours of nothing on my line, I listened to the little voice in my head telling me to go to the end of the tailout. After 3 casts - BAM Fish On!, Should have listened to that voice before as my firend we call King Neptune told us to fish the tail out.

We had a blast and the reason why I gave it a five is because this is my first Steelhead. I was motivated by Jens and said to myself "If he can do it, by golly gee, I can to!" And with everyone else hooking up out there, it was a darn good day! Planning to go back in about a week and half or so, this time with better knowledge.

Thanks Jacob. Yeah from what I learned, they love to hold behind boulders and tail outs (where the smooth water turns into rough). Make sure you get down to the bottom if your drifting. I was using a 3/8 bullet weight and when I got the strike, I thought I hit a rock, so I pulled up and then noticed that my line was kinda stretchy feeling and thats when I noticed I had one on. By no means am I an expert on Steelheading now, but I sure would love to be. Hope you have success.

Nice fish don. Im a lil jealous I guess only a few of us left without one yet. Im headed down to the cow tomorrow night and will stay till the next day sometime. Gotta be home for new years though. Im looking to meet up with someone if your interested. Better to fish at night with someone else.

Nice report and fish Donman. How far is that river from Puyallup? I need to go get my steely pig before the year end. Any tips of location and gears would be helpful. Thanks.

@ Kinghunter - I was drifting with a light to medium 8'6" Ugly Stick with 20# Fireline Crystal, 3/8 oz. bullet weight, 4' leder with a hot pink Aero Drifter and 2/O Gamikatsu hook. I was using my new Lamiglass and Daiwa reel but wasnt used to it yet and switched to my usual set up to make sure I caught something. From Puyallup t would probably be a 3 hour drive. I met a guy there who drove up from Fox Island and it took him 4.5 hours. There are many spots to fish from on that river. you sure wont lose that guy with 20# test! what # leader were you using? anyway, right on man. i caught my first steel at the bogy/ calawah confluence last year. prepare to be hooked for life!

great job! May I make one photo suggestion? Before you take your picture, clean the fish off and you'll blind us even more with that chrome-bright steelhead!
