Our second day of fishing southern Oregon for Aaron and myself was with guide Mike Springer. We had the river to ourselves as we fished a half day float on the beautiful Rogue system. About the same size as the Cowlitz, but throw in amazing steep hills along the shore. Our technique was the same - side drifting, but today we went with bait - eggs or prawns.

Had several takes early but once again we just couldn't get the hooks to stick. Mike, our guide, was amazingly knowledgeable about the river, to the point of directing me plus/minue 5 feet on my casts to find gravel bottom versus sand. We did end the day catching two "half-pounders". These are a unique run to the Rogue river, steelhead that return at one year. According to Mike they are excellent tablefare and come in pretty significant numbers. Unfortunately, we didn't get any steelhead other than these early returning fish. It was still a great float and one I would do again in a heartbeat. Mike's guide skills were impressive!

the Rogue kicks out hatchery fish in to the upper teens. But really, if you were to make that statement, you'd never go out with a guide. To me it's nice to have someone else deal with everything and just sit back and enjoy the ride. That's what I like about going with a guide.

Thanks for the report. Another fun-filled day for the WL.com gurus. Good to see it! Good luck out there!

Hey Rob30,
Mike said 2 fish that were 1/2 pounders and it's not very nice to laugh at others for sharing their reports. Sometimes that is the risk with using a guide, you win some and lose some on catching fish, but you always win in learning new knowledge and experiences. Be a little more respectful to others Rob30.

Mike - I went with a guide on the Trask last year and got skunked and rain soaked. Still had a great day and learned a lot. Sounds like you did to! Keep at 'er and tight lines!

Rob - Just 'cause the fish don't bite on a trip doesn't mean that the guides don't share knowledge. And just because the fish are off the bite doesn't mean you got a poor guide.
