Well, decided to head out to the Snoho for some Sturgeon action. Launched the boat at around 8am and got up and fishin' the spot by 830am or so. We ran 2 rods with live sandshrimp on both. It was COLD this morning eveything was iced over, including the launch ramp. We got a few bites on the outgoing tide in the morning, but none of them were serious about eating the bait. I am fairly certain they were sturgeon bites, but the world will never know. The incoming tide was weak today and the current running out of the Snoho was pretty strong so the boat was kind of fishing all over for the second half of the day and wouldn't lay out just right in the current making it hard to fish. We decided not to stay for the afternoon tide change and left at 2pm with no fish to show for it. There were 2 other boats fishing the same area as us, no hook ups. The weather was fabulous, sunny and even WARM in the early afternoon, it was a pleasure being on the water. We saw a pair of bald eagles and other wildlife and just enjoyed a few coors lights while our bait soaked. Also broke in the new slingshot I got on board, good source of entertainment in the down time trying to aim and shoot stuff.

Good luck out there. This fishery should be picking up this month into next.

I've landed more than a few starry flounder at 20" while chasing sturgeon out there, not sturgeon but fun when the bite is slow. God to hear you made it out there.

saltyseadog I have been hearing that is has been slower than the Snoho, but there have been some good days here and there. Mostly oversize fish, same with the snoho.

hmmmm sling shot eh.....i heard if ya go to a craft shop or such and buy lrage beads....1s about the size of a shooter marble maybe....1s with a pretty big hole in 'em.......they make a really kewl noise when they fly....say while you "aim and shoot at stuff"....just say'n....DOG

Mark, I'd be glad to take you out some other time on a weekend. Shoot me a PM if you're interested. Greydog, that's a cool idea I might have to try it. We got the slingshot as a seal deterrent when salmon fishing, I recently found out that sling shots and paintball guns are OK to use on nuisance seals if they are harassing your property or your fish (it is a NOAA listing).

The info regarding the use of paintball gun for deterring seals is absolutely THE most valuable info I have gotten from this site (no offense to anyone else, as I appreciate the timely reports). I could have really used that info this past Silver season. Thanks again for posting the link.

Hey Matt, You may already be doing this but put your bait caster in free spool after you've settled to the bottom, that might help in hook up ratio. Often times I'll just let it take line slowly off the spool before I set the hook. Good Luck

Do you put it in free spool, or turn the clicker on? I have tried leaving the spool open with the clicker on, but don't like to leave it in free spool because the line won't stay tight and you can't detect the bites.

I'll usually have the clicker off and tighten up the spool knob a bit. I hear ya, it gets kind of tricky. Having the right contact with bottom and how the tide is running plays a big part. When I've been bit I would watch my reel handle rotate about maybe 6-10 times, pick up my rod, mend in some line and hopefully there's some big time weight on the end ( sometimes it may be my weight tumbling with the tide). I'm by far no expert but this has worked for me.
