I had a little time in the late afternoon to get outside in between rain showers, so I drove over to the Sammamish river regional park to try a little fishing in the slough. Fished for about an hour throwing a silver Dick Nite and a gold Kastmaster. Tried several points along the bank, but no luck other spotting a muskrat and some sort of a small hawk.

While I was fishing, my girlfriend was walking our dog (a Westie puppy) back and forth on the Sammamish river trail just behind me. As I was packing up to leave, a pitbull who was jogging with his owner without a leash tried to attack our dog. The pitbull pinned our dog down twice before our dog managed to get away, but he was so scared he ran into the river and tried swimming to get away. Since he was just a puppy, I didn't know if he could swim or not, so I had to dive into the river after him and pull him out. During all this, the owner of the pitbull did nothing to stop his dog until after mine got away into the river. The owner ran away with his dog after I threatened to call the cops, but not before he asked if "I wanted him to kick my butt" (that's the censored version) and giving me the middle finger.

I wrote all this down as a warning to anybody who walks or fishes along that section of the trail. If you see a skinny white teenager (I'd guess between 16 and 18 years old) with an average sized black and white pitbull without a leash, be very careful, especially if you have a dog or a small child with you. I have no doubt that dog will try to attack somebody again. We were lucky, he didn't bite my dog, but I'm not sure if it's because he didn't try or didn't have time. Just be careful out there.

Wow!! What is wrong with some people out there?? It is hard not to sink to his level, and yes KICK his butt. Glad you all came out OK.

One minute you and your Girlfriend are enjoying your day. The next, your forced to enter the creek/river to possibly save your puppy because of the ignorance of the jogger and his dog? Then, the joggers ignorance stoops to a lower level by threatening you. Has this dude been a bully all his life? Certainly, accepting responsibility was not embedded in his early years. Idiot and Stuuuuuuuupid come to mind.. The fact that your dog took to water for the very first time due to fear, indicates he or she was in full panic/surviver mode. I sincerely hope your dog isn't severely affected by this unnecessary incident.

Wingnut, Sorry to hear about that! My Wife and I also have a westie and have had FOUR run ins with unleashed pitbulls and our dog. The most recent was at Christmas time while snowshoeing at Gold Creek. I don't know why these folks can't keep these type of dogs leashed. (Well, maybe I do know)

Thanks for the concern guys. We filed a report with King County Animal Control, but without knowing the name of the owner there's not much they can do. They're going to keep the report on file in case we can spot the guy again and get a license plate or some other way to ID him, or in case somebody else files another report with the same description. I guess I need to go fishing there more to see if the SOB comes back.

Our dog is ok physically, but he is freaked out by other dogs now. He barks at any dog he sees, and tries to snap at them if they get too close and he can't run away. Unfortunately, we'll have some work to do to get him back to normal.

I think a bat, steel toed boots and a tazer gun. I`m thinking more for the owner and kind of for the dog. Unfortunately, most of the time it`s the upbringing of the animal that makes them how they are. I`m glad your dog is OK.
