Had a great day on the mighty PO today,
. It was a beautiful sunny day the water temps in the river was up to 37.5 to 37.8 and other then it was a touch windy is was a perfect day for pike fishin in the late winter. Got there at about 11 AM and fished by myself for about 2 hours then my buddy Mikey showed up finally and we fished till the sun was starting to go behind the hill.

Here is the first fish I got.

Got it at Ashton Fetcher bay, that's a 4 3/4" S-waver in Kokanee color sticking out of its mug I got 2 other fish, but unfortunately my camera batteries died trying to take a pix of the second fish. Both the other fish I got were a little bigger then the one pictured, but not a lot. Biggest was maybe 28". I had 6 bites total and got 3 fish out of that, 2 on lures and 1 on herring, I sure can't complain about that for this time of year. That makes 7 fish (Pike) so far this year. The river is in great shape, a little higher then when i fished it last, but it's pretty clear and almost ice free. The fish were hitting good in the morning and part of the afternoon till the wind picked up and the bite quit. Only bad thing that happened all day this time is my cheap Berkley Cherrywood rod broke in half on a hookset, but at least I still landed the fish, that was the 28".

Landing a large fish with a broken rod makes for a classic story. Going over to the bucket to check out fish. Photobucket seems to be a popular website to upload trouble free pictures.

I wouldn't call a 28" pike large by any means, but I've caught a lot that were
smaller. lol Sorry the picture didn't show here. Copy and paste it without the (img) on each end and you can see it.

Good job fish-n-fool ! .. do you have to fish those baits pretty slow right now or can you run them a little quicker? ...would a spinnerbait work this time of year? ... oh and for the herring rig, do you use a bobber or just plunk it? i have been wanting to go and do this for a while ...i only ever usually fish the reaction baits cuz summer is when I have time to fish ....but I have heard of a number of guys say that the spring bite can be wicked awesome!

all the fish caught on lures bit while the bait was still. i use a slow rip and pause retrieve. Waiting about 5 to 10 sec. between rips. As for dead bait I fish it under a slip bobber and a bobber stop, (like you drift shrimp for steelhead), with a weight above the steel leader to get the bait down. I use a single large treble through the belly and out the back for the herring rig.
