Well it was the first trip to the river this year. Weather was blue skies and calm. Started at Davis where there were lots of locals fishing from the bank using bait. Watched a guy catch a 15lber on bait at the mouth. We missed 2 pike, 1 that was pretty good size. Then we jumped across the river to cow slough and joined the fleet of 10 boats that were piled into a shallow area. Upon investigating we found that several of them had caught several fish in the 20" range. We weren't finding anything of quality there so we did things a little different and found the quality we were looking for. 15lber late in the day, RELEASED.

I have stopped posting on here over the last couple years for a number of reasons, but after seeing the bait fisherman kill the 15lb fish and hearing a guy talk about taking home a 27lb fish the week before I thought this would be a good opportunity to point out the importance of releasing those big fish. The only way we are going to continue to have the great fishery we have is if we protect it. Right now fish and wildlife has a different idea about how to manage the pike. I hope they can come to their senses about it, but in the meantime we need to do all we can to keep it. Those big fish are what prevent the fishery from beeing taken over by all the hammer handle pike that ruin so many fisheries. There is more info on this in the muskie forum. They have created a seperate forum there just for the pike. Check it out and go catch some big ones! Good luck.

What would you guys consider good size to release? I don't want to anger anyone if I decided to keep a northern that is between 25-30". I haven't gone out there this year yet and would like to get a couple for the dinner table real soon here.

We try to keep fish under 25". There seems to be tons of that size and thats the size that need to be reduced. Hmongspokane did you go for Sturgeon this weekend?

Thanks for the report Gone You know i agree all the bigger fish need to be released. If people keep the 10-12lb we will never see 20lb plus fish. Congrats and thanks for the realse of the 15lber...

Gone Fishin,
Long time my man. It is about time you got up there!! I like to think you were the one that started the chaos on this site with your two sexy pike from 2008. Do you have pictures of your 15lber? Post them up!!

Oh yeah, and I couldn't agree with your more gone about those bigger fish. They are the key to a healthier future of northern pike fishing on the POR!!

@Yankin Jaw- yea I went with my brother-in-law on Saturday. We fished from around 7am til noon under the dam. Didn't even get a nibble. A couple of older gentlemen pulled an oversize one in right by us. With no luck we left the dam and tried our luck by Central Ferry. Nothing either. I will be leaving for Oklahoma to visit my folks and do some spoonbill, striper, and blue catfish fishing. I will be back in July so hopefully the sturgeon activity picks up then. Good luck to you guys!

Nice pike gone!!! Great job on releasing her too. Now that the cat is out of the bag about the POR pike fishing, I can't stress enough the importance of releasing those big girls. Great Job. Definitely Jealous
