5/2/2011 3:21:00 PMI am on a mission to remove as many Pike from the system this size as possible. However with the state talking about possibly Gill netting the system to remove Pike they will not care whether small or large fish are removed. WDFW.wa.gov there are tons of articles and discussions about the Pike issue on the Pend Oreille river and the different options being discussed of removing them out of the system. Controversial issue to say the least, I am always for keeping the bigger fish in the system to protect a steady and reliable fishery but there is an issue in this river that is being addressed. I don't think that me as one single person can catch enough to avoid the state taking drastic measures but we as fisherman catching and keeping as many fish as possible out of the system right now may make enough of a difference to avoid ridiculous measures. Just my thought on this-Lenny

5/2/2011 6:42:00 PMI don't have a boat, but I would love to catch some pike on the Pend Orielle river or somewhere in the vicinity. Does anyone know of some good spots where I could do that without a boat?

5/2/2011 7:18:00 PMWDFW will more than likely do a gill netting of some sort every year to keep tract of the Pike and their numbers. WDFW did gill net last week, they placed 60 nets on the Box Canyon Res as part of their research netting to get a count on the number of Pike in the river to compare to last years numbers. We need to understand the river is not over run by any means. I think a few years ago the Pike had a great spawning year and thats why were seeing so many 24-25" fish class right now but not alot of bigger fish or smaller ones. Not alot of places to fish the river from shore but Ashtonfelter slough does have bank fishing available along with the boat launchs on the river. Davis slough does have some bank fishing also.

5/2/2011 8:21:00 PMAn old indian trapper showed me how to fillet out the Northern Pike, with 2 easy cuts and the fillet comes off with the y bone removed for two completely boneless pieces and absolutely no waste of meat... Also showed me how to clean a snapping turtle, that is a little more difficult. Pike is a great eatin fish, except when on the spawn!

In posting information regarding exactly where I was at or referencing a specific location it would be very useful, I also would just like to learn more detail about the Pend Oreille River.

That should tell you everything you need to know about the sloughs just reading through that thread. Maybe check out some of the other conversations too as there are a lot of people posting there that fish the river a TON. That is one of the few maps I know of that people have basically labeled it all out for you.
