After such a good day on Wednesday I returned to the Satsop with my buddy and his drift boat on Thursday. We were hoping to catch our limits or some memorable coho. We got there earlier since the bite had shut off rather suddenly around 11 AM and motored upstream to where we had our best fishing the day before. There were two boat trailers in the parking lot and we were worried that someone might set up shop in our favorite spot but it was open. Cool!! My buddy armed himself with a large dick nite in silver and red and I started twitching a hootchie jig. My first cast and I nail a large bright hatchery coho maybe 11 or 12 pounds. As I was landing it my buddy hooks and lands a chrome native around 6-7 lbs. The coho I caught had some parasites in its scales which I understand don't affect the meat but since fishing was red hot I let her go. My buddy was still unhooking his fish when I started fishing again. He let his go because we had caught larger natives the day before. Two casts in and I hook and land a 6 or 7 lb hatchery coho that was a little darker and had some scars from a battle with a seal, I presume. Once again I cut him loose in hopes of larger brighter fish. Five more casts and I land a small chrome native coho.....Wow!! Less than ten casts in and I have landed 3 coho and my buddy has one. Back goes the small native and then the bite shuts down. Uh, oh. Fished a couple more hours and had a couple more fish on and one near the boat but no landings. In retrospect I should have kept the first hatchery fish and the native but then I would have had to stop fishing which wouldn't have been acceptable. I have very little room in my freezer for more fish and plenty of eggs for steelhead season so I was happy. Got home early and got some errands taken care of so all in all a great day with plenty of sunshine and a wide open river. We explored some new areas that looked promising for future trips so hopefully that will pay off.
