Just got back from the early opener at Tokul Creek. Ran into some good buddies and everyone else for miles around. Was a real metropolis out there. Not for the shy anglers, but it was still a great bunch of guys.

Fished up and down, the eddy and back up again. In true tokul fashion I hooked more fish than I brought in, but it was still a great day. The water was low, the fish were there and all in all was a fun time.

Drift fished with corkies and the usual twitching jigs at first, lost my first few to the current. Stopped at my favorite spot for lunch, had it all to myself, put a dick nite on and plunked it while I ate. Sat there and watched as a huge fish moved into the pocket, right up next to my spoon. It sat there for a good two three minutes and I finished my sardines and ritz while I saty there. This fish was a beast. I watched as it finally got fed up, inhaled my spoon, felt the hook turned into the current and started ripping line. Went all the way up came all the way back down, up and down, and then rode the current 100 feet down, I put the thumbs to it and he snaps off. Same thing with the next fish and I get it in. about half the size, but small enough to bank. Pretty bright hen, but when I unzipped her the hatchery had taken the roe and threw her back. It's great that they're doing that!

Anyways, had to cut it short, get home to the wife. No secrets here, you'll have lots of company, but the fish will be there for a bit. Lotta reds right now, but a lot of chrome came out today as well. Tight lines!

Nice report. Ive had times like that when ive plunked for steel. Take a smoke or food break and plunk for a bit then fish on. @brian theres plenty of river and fish right now. Go to reiter... Then you will see assholes to elbows lol.

" but when I unzipped her the hatchery had taken the roe and threw her back. It's great that they're doing that!"

Can you clarify what you mean there... I'm not that in touch with river fishing, or hatchery (methods of egg harvest, etc.) Are you saying that they strip the fish of roe at some point?

Yea, they took the eggs out to spawn her and then put her back. For the most part they give 'em to the food bank. There were a few eggs left and they were small, and she was pretty darn bright, no way she was spawned out.

Why would the hatchery give the Steelhead they remove eggs and sperm from to the food bank? All salmon die after spawning. But don't Steelhead return the following year to spawn again? This isn't making sense!

@motoboat I believe they harvest the egg's and then dump em back in the river. Yes salmon die off anually and steel are turn arounds that go back out and come back the following year. I dont know if this is acurate does anyone else want to chime in. like you old fart's. Joking haha

Nate - nice report as always! The way I understand it (my disclaimer) is the hatchery takes the eggs and sperm and will either return the fish to the river or harvest them and donate the meat to the food banks. They don't need to cut the fish to harvest eggs/sperm. If the fish is ready, they can take the eggs/sperm just by squeezing the belly of the fish from front to back (kind of like a tube of toothpaste).

Great report nate. Thanks for the read. Wanted to go to the zoo yesterday to see the show, but my keeper wouldn't let me out.

That is sweet that you got a steelie to hit a dick nite. It is really funny to me and kind of sad that the Snoqualmie only turns into a combat fishery once they open Tokul Creek so all the flossers can have a chance at catching a fish. Where are all you guys at when the creek isn't open and you have to fish with something other than a corkie and yarn?

I know it's the tendency of a lot of fishermen to keep places like this quiet to keep the crowds down. But I just want to say thanks to those who share because that's what fishing should be about. Helping other fishermen, maybe not with so much experience, find some of the good runs and take our kids out to become fishermen. Thanks Nate.

How do you twitch jigs in that creek? I twitch jigs for Silvers, but for Steelhead? Is there enough water there to even do so? You even write the water is low. Sorry for so many questions, but if twitching jigs is productive, then I'd be interested to learn how.
How much weight were you using when you were plunking? I might try this sometime. Boy I bet that was awesome seeing a fish inhale your dick nite like that.
Thanks for the report.
