Haven't posted in a while because it seems I'm always working. Or fishing. Not much face time with the computer anyway. The river has been tough the last 2 weeks. Not a single king yet this year. I've got permission to fish a beautiful strech of private property just east of Monroe near Ben Howard but it has not been producing for me. 2 weeks ago I went 5 for 7 on the steelhead in 2 mornings of fishing. (All wild unfortunately but it was my best week of steelheading in the 9 years I've lived here.)( I'm lucky to get 5 a year it seems,) Anyway, all the steel fell to a jig running 5-6 feet under a slip bobber, no bait. I've been trying all the usual hardware since kings were opened and all for nada. Talked to a regular at my bar who had some success this past week and all he would say is "Bait, and bait heavy." So I dug out the last of my pink and silver eggs from the freezer, grabbed some sand shrimp, and headed to the river. The fishing improved drastically but not for the kings. I couldn't keep bait on the hook long enough for a king to find it. A school of small cutties had moved into the hole and were relentless. I must have tossed back 30 or 40 6 to 10 inch fish. Highlight of the day was a 20 inch whitefish. Biggest whitefish I've seen. Very thick too. Bet he woulda been tasty. (released of course) I'll be out there again tomorrow and hoping once again to loose the king skunk stink. Anyone else finding any? Reports don't seem very positive. Come on rain! Tight lines all.
