Went out to the skykomish today not expecting to catch much but boy did i catch a surprise. Started out with a float and bait and caught a few smaller trout and even got a jack king, i let them all go. What the surprise catch was this fish i can only describe as looking like a tilapia i assume is someones pet that they let go into the sky. Pretty strange to see those fish there today. There were actually 2 of them and they were close to shore under a log. I tossed half a piece a worm to them and got the one. Definately surprised me to even see those fish in the skykomish. Anyone know what kind of fish that is?

I could be wrong and probably am, but that sure looks like a baby black sea bass. Anyone else agree? It sure has the body and colors/markings for a sea bass.

I also thought something maybe in the carp family but just doesn't quite look like it

It definitely looks like a tilapia to me. It's amazing what people will release in to the wild.

Totally a Tillapia. Just came back from So Cal a few days ago, and i was catching those all day long. Its weird that their are in the sky because supposedly they die in temps under 55 degrees. Its probably a hardier species native to the mountainous regions of Egypt, Sudan or South Sudan.

NimmunDay- I thought they would need warmer water also. thanks too for confirming the identity of this mystery fish. I don't think they are native to the sky and like i said in the report i think someone let them go in the sky when they got too big for their fish tank. Anyway they will probably die when the cold winter temps come.

Did you turn that in to the wdfw yet? If there is two of you on here that have caught them that means there is a lot more out there we dont know about.

I caught this fish about 100 yds above the mouth of the sultan. I have sent the pictures to wdfw and have not heard back yet about them.

Those fish are extremely invasive, I hope they are removed or die quickly, although after a short web search I would guess it is already too late.

thought it was a sucker fish at first, but doesnt have the same mouth or brown tint to it. it probably just got released this summer, theres no way those things could survive through the winter up here. did you put it back? or did you kill it? would be cool if there was a school of tilapia getting bigger and bigger out on the sky every year. i hear they're fun to fish, and they taste really good too!!

If they didn't harm the salmon/steelhead runs that would be fine but i want to say once they get big enough they would start eating the salmon/steelhead smolts. I did let it go because i didn't know what to do with it.
