so after reading postings and getting some hints from other fisherman I decided to try my luck at the Sammamish river. I parked in Woodinville and walked down river past 405. I started with the bead head for some pike minnow, you could see them swimming around all over the place, I had no luck what so ever doing that so I switched to my go to fly, my royal coachman. boom first cast I hook onto a pike minnow slammed it on the surface. I wish more fish fought like those fish for their size they don’t give up. after wading down to the next hole I saw what I thought was a rainbow surfacing under a tree. a few casts a hook up with the tree and a new coachman I ended up catching a healthy 12" rainbow. fished and walked along the trail for about 3.5 hours, I ended up with 1 pike minnow, 5 rainbows and countless miss from me not paying attention. I would have taken a picture of the rainbow but cell what MIA in my back pack at the time.

can’t wait to go back

Did you really walk down past river from Woodinville to Bothell? I think 405 is the border of Bothell right? Sounds like a nice day though! Were they only biting on flies?

yeah i could only l get them to bite on dry flies, i don t think i know how to correctly fish anything but dry flies. i have never caught anything on a bead head or scud or anything like that. yeah i walked from woodinvill to about 1 mile past 405, it was along hull with wet shoes lol.

Yeah I bet it was a long haul from Woodinville...HAHA! I'm actually just the opposite with the dries and bead heads...I've actually only caught everything from the Sammamish River swinging bead head nymphs and never have gotten a fish with a dry... :/ I wonder if there's parking closer to 405 where you were fishing, you think so?

Nice! what size of royal coachman did you use? Ive only got 2 on dries and same with tsath24 gotten them all on bead head nymphs also oneshot my dad caught a 4lb pikeminnow in there once last year!!

actually there was 1 run just below the play fields i parked at in woodinville where i caught 75% of my fish, it was the only fast (slow moving) water around. i am thinking we should meet up one afternoon and swap techniques.

I wouldn't be opposed, I actually know what body of water you're talking about. Just name a time and place and I'll see if I can squeeze it in between these two jobs... :/

Any idea what flies work best on the pikeminnows (anyone)? Was thinking of trying to slay as many as possible now that I FINALLY got a license and a chance to get out :-)

Figured sink tip with some smallish weighted nymph.

Be sure to retain the pikeminnows (or at least beach them for the birds or raccoons) and be extra careful letting the trout go. Tough for the trout and salmon smolts to compete with all the piekminnows in the river.
