Great day on the water, just about 180 degrees difference from yesterday. No lost lures to snags and 3 fish caught(but one released).1st fish I was up, Put my favorite rig on Melanie's spinning rod, a lite ugly stick, 7 ft, rated for 15, loaded it with 30 lb braid mainline, 25 lb to flasher after weight, and 20 to lure, kept more gear from getting lost after yesterday. As I was up after catching no fish yesterday my rod had a blue fox on but the "flying C" on Melanie's rod once again paid off and she handed me her rod. A HUGE king put on the serious battle, we lost count of blistering runs after 6 or 7, but the new braid and leaders held strong and we got him into the net, after getting the lure back from a great inch from corner of jaw hookup we snapped a quick photo on the way back to the water. Glad for the fight, tomorrow if we catch kings we can keep them, we'll be running fresh brined herring on one rod for them and the flying c on the other!Melanie on the afternoon slack came up with this gorgous buck, 13 3/4 lbs. This fish put on one of the most amazing battle I've ever seen, it hit on my rod but since Mel was "up", I handed her the lamiglass kenai composite rod with the abu record reel and the fight was on!I thought it initially was a king 'cause of the blistering run and deep dives under the boat, but after handing off the rod Melanie couldn't feel it, I told her to keep reeling when this huge fish shoots by the side of the canoe. It tightened the line 10 feet in front of the boat and took a left 30 yards to center of river where it started to come to the surface, I knew if it jumped it might be a big silver we could keep, it came 3 to 4 ft out of the water and I saw it was a coho! She fought it like a pro, I was pretty proud. We estimated the king at 25 to 30, I've caught a 23lber that I could keep out of Tacoma a few years back so I got a pretty good idea as to weight without stressing fish with scale or girth measurements. A half hour after Mel's buck I caught a CHROME hen as bright as a new dime, 5 lbs.Tomorrow, KINGS kept! (at least we hope so!)Bob R

Is it legal to hold fish out of the water if they are to be released?

We are fishing frrom a 15 ft. canoe in the middle of the Chehalis river, fish is in a net to hold him while lure is removed safely(difficult to do when it's a big king and you are trying to not do him undue harm and not lose net or capsize boat with engine off and drifting down river in a crowd of boats.. Obviously fish is in the process of being lifted out of net, (dark circle under fishes head, wife had the camera in one hand and handle of net in other)and released, fish was never brought into boat and was never lifted above sides of canoe(which is pretty close to the water.Held fish by tail while supporting weight with other hand. If you can tell me another way to do it safely please point it out. I would have just dumped him out but teeth that size get tangled in net easily, had to work mouth free. .Bob R
