Another quick trip to the river before work....but this one actually produced something other than curses. Yes, I finally had a stellar trip. I rate it a 4 in my own book, but still had to work for the fish and can't really say fishing was on fire. Went 2/2 this morning.
Anyhow, got to the river at 9am. A few guys already fishing there. Nice calm overcast morning with fish rising in multiple places. Tide was out and just starting to turn around. Found a backwater to cast my jig into. Less than 10 minutes later I had a heavy blow on the second "twitch". Knew right away it wasn't a rock and that it had some size to it. Took a few minutes to get him to bank as he made three really great runs after getting him close to shore. The whole time I kept expecting him to come unbuttoned. And who says praying doesn't work?! Missed one attempt at netting him, but got him on the second. Not sure how heavy he was, but dwarfed my previous two. Will weigh the gutted fish when I get home and report back. He had a little color to him, but beggars can't be choosers, eh? Shortly after I saw two guys upriver both hookup (not sure what they were fishing with). One guy landed two in short order (one chrome and one darker) and I found out later the other guy had gone 0/2.
A guy came down a joined me and a boat moved into the area. About 30 minutes later I hooked another on the same jig. Not as large, but an average sized hen, which I was more than happy to catch as I've been wanting some skeins. She fought well, but came in easier than the buck. The guy next to me asked if he could buy a jig from me. Since my jigs are all unique, I let him borrow one until I left. He tried it for a while without success before handing it back in lieu of something else. The guy in the boat trolled through, then anchored up and seemed to be jigging something. Didn't see him hook up either.
I tried pitching for a few more minutes to see if I could fill my limit, but that was all for me. Spent a total of an hour there, so was very happy with what I was taking home especially since I caught them on a home made jig. WOOT!
Props to JJ for the jig advice.
Sorry for the crummy cell phone pics, but Jens, this is for you! LOL.
