After finding the Humptulips river a bit too high to fish, Nate Treat took me into the backwoods of the O.P. to one of his favorite secret locations.

The salmon river area that he took me to is definitely not fished by the average angler. We hiked about a quarter mile to the river, and then criss-crossed the river in several locations to get to his secret spot. The river was up a bit but much clearer than the Hump. I was fortunate to find a staff someone had left behind as crossing without one was just too dangerous.

We saw a nice group of a half dozen bright fish as we worked to his canyon hole, but could not get them or any other fish interested in our offerings. I'm sure if you hit the deep hole location at the right time that you could do quite well, but not this day.

In any case, a fun adventure and hike into some really cool spots!

I caught my first winter steelhead out of that river. I love fishing that area, if only it wasn't so far away...

If you float that river you will wonder why you went anywhere else. The take-out is the first bridge above the Queets. The put-in is the next bridge above that. You'll have to sort out the Park regs and the Res regs. But look closely and you will find...... Especially around Thanksgiving.

I would think that would be a challenging float in my two person pontoon. But a heck of a lot of fun.

It is a challenge. We always did it in a Super Puma made by Aire. Two of us, sometimes three. I think there were two or three log jams we had to portage. But the fishing......sheesh.
