Venturing the 120 miles to forks, washington in search of a Steelhead or maybe a late Silver. I stopped by the Sol Duc hatchery and fished for about an hour but didn't see a single thing. Next I tried the bark and rayonier holes and still no luck. Going even further I made it to the Quillayute main stem where it meets the sol duc. I cannot stand crowds but it wasn't too bad and I hiked down river to find a nice quiet spot but there still was nothing to be seen.

Frustrated I took a turn on hwy 113/112 to hit the Hoko river. This is a much different fishery but a lot of fun in the right time of year. It was in excellent shape so I threw on a spinner and the first cast got smashed by a dark 10lb silver, unhooked him and snapped a picture while he was catching his breath. Caught and released 5 more, but he was the biggest. I spent the next 3 hours throwing eggs but couldn't find any steelhead, only hungry cutthroats. Still a lot of fun and hwy 112 is a great drive!

Nice report. Never knew there was coho in the hoko. Went to forks for steelhead and didn't stop at the bogy????

Thank you! the Hoko gets a couple thousand coho each year but you can't keep them. And yes I stopped by the bogie but its just too crowded for me.

Interesting, i'll have to go out there sometime. Never actually been to the hoko, though i know you can keep trout and steelhead. Well the bogy is pretty much the only place out in forks for hatchery steelhead. The hatchery is sometimes crowded, but most of the people are nice and theres plenty of room on each side of the river. Never had a problem with the crowds there. Gets a good run too. Best bet for steelies there, since they shoot up the quillayute pretty fast, and they canceled the snider creek program on the sol duc so no more hatchery winter runs in there just natives.

That's not entirely true, wdfw stocks a lot of rivers on the OP with boneheads. Sure it's nice to chat with good people on the bogie but I get my fill of hatchery fishin from the Quil and Shook. I just like to go out there for a good time. Its nice to walk up a river and have a good chance of catching something at each hole you pass by, where 10 people haven't been throwing at all morning. that's what its all about my friend.

Yeah, theres a few other OP rivers that they plant smolts in, but the bogy gets the best returns of hatchery fish. I do get tired of the hatchery thing after fishing the quil and dungy though. I like fishing the sol duc more than any river though, hardly any people and when the native steelhead are in , its always fun to fish there. Nice since i only live an hour away from the hatchery on the duc.
