Yesterday hit the lyre in search of my first bonehead of the year. The river was pretty full but very clean. Parking at the campground i was the only person there.... couldn't believe it! I fished all the way up as far as the trail goes fishing with eggs of course but by two o'clock i hadn't touched anything but a few small trout. So i packed it up and headed for home.,
But on my way i decided to stop at a "creek" that i used to fish in late February for natives but has not been stocked with steelhead since 2003. It now host a crib that raises chinook for the elwha project. Another guy was leaving right as i arrived but didn't have anything. So with 30 minutes of light left i threw out the bobber n eggs. On the fourth cast it goes down. I set the hook and no way! Fish on! I get it in and its a 10 lb hatchery hen. Steelhead are open here in December and January only so it came home with me because it'll probably never happen again... no skill here this was just pure luck. I sent a picture to my cousin in California and he said i quote "your killing me" haha.

Nice steelie, and report. I think i know that place, not too many hatchery fish caught out there just natives so good job on getting a bright hatchery fish! With all the rivers out here being really slow on steelhead, even 1 steelhead is doing good.

I haven't caught a hatchery fish out of here since 2007. Its actually pretty fun the last two weeks of february., but it'll be another 5 or 10 years before we can do that again.

Yeah, surprised to see a hatchery fish in there. Only heard of one a buddy of mine caught last year. Never really fished it much, but heard it used to be great in february. Sad to see alot of the little streams and creeks close so early now.
