Took the boat out Saturday evening because many people had been telling me how fantastic the mouth of the Yakima was for channel cats. At first, I got a bit lost in the Yakima Delta, having turned in too early (and getting into muddy, 4-5' backwaters). Finally made my way down to the area in the mouth off of Bateman Island. Water was probably 7-8', with a mild amount of current coming off the Yakima River. Half a dozen other boats in the area as well.
Fished for about two hours until 8:30 pm with cut herring and nightcrawlers off the bottom, and they were not in the least molested by any catfish.
Am I missing something? Should I have headed up further up the Yakima? I'm puzzled why everyone says this is such a killer catfish fishery, because that was not only lame, but irritating. I did not note any of the other boats catching fish, either.
To add insult to injury, when I got back to the Richland boat launch, some kids were headed off the fishing dock with a small channel cat (maybe 3 lbs).
I'm distinctly underwhelmed....
