We fished high and low today. At around 1 pm we hiked a good distance along a creek and found our way to a giant pool with an almost perfect depth to flow ratio; some of the absolute best water I've ever seen on the Skykomish and its forks/tributaries. We started casting away catching a couple decent rainbows and a nice 14 inch whitefish. During one cast I hooked into an unknown beast. I fought the fish for maybe twenty seconds as it peeled and peeled drag and eventually bent the hook straight and got off. I was devastated, but I guess some fish just aren't meant to be caught... We'll never know what the fish was. My best guess is that it was a summer chinook. Based on fish counts I know that a few kings have already made it this far upstream. Hopefully more are on the way! My friend landed a nice dolly out of the main fork Sky as well. We tried the Penitentiary Hole for pinks as our last stop. Some fish were rolling, but we saw nothing caught. In a week this river should be full of them. All fish were caught on Mepps spinners. All were released safely. Respect the river!
