Fished the lower river again this morning. Got there around 8AM, and was hooked into a fish within half an hour. First fish turned out to be a jack. Not long after, I hooked and landed a decent hen. About 20 minutes later, I had a bright buck on the bank. From there, it was a jack show as I landed two more, while missing several bites.
After I ran out of a certain cured egg, I stopped getting bites as frequently. Every now and then, I'd get nibbles but no real takes. Once the river went slack, I busted out a Dicknite in hopes of getting a full 6 fish limit. Made a few dozen casts, before I was hooked into an average sized Coho. Got the fish about 10 yards from the bank, when suddenly the hooked popped free. Was disappointed I couldn't get a full limit, but I reckon 5 is better than none.

Smallest jack went 13 1/2". Every fish I gutted, had its stomach full of cured eggs. I thought salmon couldn't eat in freshwater, since their throats close up?

Losaturn, nice fish. Way better than getting skunked at the Wallace. I may have to come check out the Green with you guys. The Coho on the Green don't like the fire cure as much right?

Do you fish under I-5 bridge or Tukwila Commmunity Center? Where's a good place? You would recommend morning? Thanks for any help.

Any place you can find on the lower river, should have some fish moving through. Low light, seems to fish better. You still gotta watch the tides. If the rivers not moving, the fishing gets really slow.

nice job! but i thought the limit on the Green was 3 adult coho - total of 6 is a combination of pink, coho, chum?
losaturn

Daily limit is 6 salmon. Only 3 can be Adult Coho or Chum. Meaning it's possible to keep up to 6 silvers if at least 3 of them are jacks. You have to catch them, before you retain a limit of Adult Coho or chum. Once you get your adult limit, you have to stop fishing.

Ah got it! Newbie question - what's the size range for Jack and what's min size for adult? And do these sizes apply to both Coho and Chinook?
losaturn
10/17/2013 9:44:00 AM
All salmon have to be a min size of 12". Chinook Jacks are less than 24", and Adults are over 24". Coho Jacks are less than 20", and Adults are over 20".

Thx, losaturn! Btw were you drifting or float drifting the eggs? If float, what was your leader length from float to hook?
losaturn
10/17/2013 11:17:00 AM
Drifting with a 3ft leader. When I float fish for these fish, I use a 20" leader.

When do you use float and when do you switch to drift? Do you read the water level and flow? Newbie guy trying to catch his first coho. :-) Might give it a try this weekend at the lower river and any help would be appreciated.

All about preference. I float fish only in slower deep holes, with some form of woody structure. You can drift eggs almost anywhere there is some current.

Cool! Thanks. Hey, can I be your fishing buddy? :-) I wouldn't mind hanging out the weekend and learn some lesson. :-) What do you think of Codiga Park area? I want to give a try this weekend.
