Two friends and I decided to get out and fish the Skagit for the Sockeye opener today. In short, we got skunked. Read on if you want more detail.

We spent the morning plunking in the stretch just downstream of the railroad trestle in Mt. Vernon, near the I-5 bridge. We got there early and had our lines in the water right about at 4:15. We all had similar setups, using 5 to 8 oz pyramids, cured coon shrimp or raw grocery store prawns, beads and Spin'N'Glows in size 4 and 6 with lots of color variants including glow, pink, orange, green and chartreuse. I also used a bit of yarn, red and orange, with sand shrimp/salmon egg scent and sand shrimp/anise scent. Throughout the day we had a few fishy looking taps, but nothing that ever really committed. Could have been a soft Sockeye bite, or maybe a trout or Dolly. This was however the first time any of us had fished the Skagit or plunked, although there were plenty of other guys there and we didn't see or hear anything at all in the stretch that we fished. We called it a day and left at 9. I did hear of one fish up river being brought in but that was it.

Anyone else get out and have better luck?
