I made my annual trek to the Olympic Peninsula to try my luck on some of the coast rivers. As expected the rivers are all very low and not many of the Silvers have made their way into the river system. Most of the drift boats are hitting the Sol Duc because there are a few holes that hold most of the fish. After that the Hoh and Bogachiel are hit and miss for fish. I fished the Hoh on Monday in a drift boat and hade only 2 silvers all day in an 8 mile drift. Only one other boat that day so it's not like we had competition. However, on Tuesday I found a very nice hole on the Bogachiel with some fish rolling in it. Because the water was so low I was able to wade across the river to get to it. My heart pounded because I knew there would be a few silvers willing to bite. First cast, I have a 13 pound coho on. After the fish performed 3 aerial launches, the hook came out and that was the end of that. So I cast back to the same spot and have another coho on just like that. This fish was about 7 pounds (see picture) and I was more than happy with it. With that catch, my 1 fish limit ended my fishing day on the Bogachiel. So I made my way over to the Sol Duc to see if I could get a king. When arriving at the hole I could see 40 or so kings swimming back and forth. Unfortunately, because the water was so low and clear, the fish were easily spooked and would not take anything I offered them. It was kinda frustrating watching all these big fish swim right by and around by bait. Just remember if you fish these coastal rivers, check the regs because many of them only have a 1 salmon limit.
