Took my 3 year old Nephew Trenton out for his first fishing experience.
The weather was beautiful and the volunteers did a great job of cleaning up the park recently. I was surprised how many people were fishing here, because I had not seen anybody fish this pond all year. It was a holiday after all, and some must of heard of the recent stocking.
When we arrived we saw one kid walking out with a nice one. Trenton got excited and could not wait to get his line in the water. Soon as he threw it out there a few feet he had a monster strike that took his bait. Re-baited and a few minutes later wham! The fight was on. Trenton did not know what to do, I finally got him to start pulling the reel lever on his new Spiderman pole. Once it got close he totally freaked out at the monster in the water! He briefly dropped his pole and ran. Luckily he re-gathered himself, ( ok he's 3 it didn't take long) and dragged in a beautiful 15 inch Rainbow.
After that he had one other big one on that eventually snapped his 4# test leader. Action slowed and we left after about 1 hour total fishing. Trenton proudly carried out his big Bow with a huge grin.
There is a big sign when you walk in that says FISHING FOR 14 AND UNDER ONLY. That didn't stop some people. Two guys with surf rods and reels threw out some giant jigs but did not hook anything. They were really clueless and asked how we caught the "Salmon".
The Old Fishing Hole is a shallow, juveniles only pond located at the intersection of Meeker street and Kent Des Moines road. It has a season from the last Saturday in April until the end of October. It usually does not get planted with Trout however until mid May. I would guess it is about 1.5 to 2 acres.
