My buddy Mark called me Sunday afternoon around 4pm to see if I had done any fishing over the weekend and somehow we convinced ourselves to go right then. Since we had almost an hour drive and only a couple hours of daylight left we decide to leave the boat and bank fish. We later regretted not having the boat.
Mark donned his chest waders, eased around some cattails and tossed a frog onto some dollar pads and three casts later pulls in a nice bass. Tried the area about 10 more minutes but nothingelse. The bottom was so mushy he ditched the waders and moved to the bank. There are a few open spots but alot of areas are lillys, reeds and trees. Casting wasn't too bad but landing of fish of any size can be a challenge.
I walked the shore tossing a 5" senko, finally hooked a decent fish. He ruined my bait and the car was about 200 yards away. All I had in my pocket was a green gobi so I switched. A few castes later the gobi landed among some lilly pads and they exploded! A big bass came all the way out of the water but he missed completely. I reel in fast, cast again and WHAM! No miss this time. I managed to land the fish after quite a struggle through thick weeds. This guy did not
want to come out of the water. Without braided line and the fact that he inhaled it so deep he would have got away. We had no scale, but I think he was pushing 5lbs.
About this time some sort of hatch occured. I'm not sure what they were but the lake became covered in millions of what looked like tiny white moths. Also the fish turned on. By the time the bugs and sun started to fade, Mark had landed 11 including an at least 5lber and lost half a dozen. I ended up with 8 plus a few lost. Had we brought the little boat our range would have been unlimited and our catch much greater I'm sure. All the fish we caught we released to fight another day.
On a side note, last week Mark caught a good size bass with a big scar on its side and we wondered what would have caused it. Any boat here has to be small enough to launch by hand through one of the openings in the brush. Well, 2 days after our trip Mark had a service call that took him by the lake so he stopped for 15 minutes
and nailed another 5lbr. He released it and as it swam away near the surface a bald eagle swooped down, clamped on its head, pulled him out but dropped him! That'll leave a scar.
