Anybody who has fished in the winter knows you roll the dice everytime you go out. My buddy Glenn and I took my Crestliner to Porcupine on Saturday. Once you turn off the highway the road is extremely icy, be very careful if you go. The ramp is very icy as well but there was a lot of sand so launching wasn't a big deal. Got the boat in the water, pumped up the fuel line and then all I heard was click. Motor wouldn't turn over. I knew my batteries were fully charged so it was quite odd. Checked the connections and tried cranking again, it turned over. My Honda is extremely cold blooded and requires me to use the throttle to get the motor to start. Tried advancing the throttle and it wouldn't budge. I had tried it on friday and all was OK. Thought Ok it won't start with out pumping the throttle so I will just use my kicker to motor across the bay. My 6hp Johnson always starts by the third pull but not today. It was looking like we would never get away from the dock. Eventually after Glenn and I worked up a sweat it started. We putted across the bay and proceeded to catch 8 small Walleyes, all around 16in. We then slowly motored over to the hump on the right side just before you go upriver. On the way I decided to mess with my throttle linkage and eventually figured out where the problem was. Added a small amount of two stroke oil, was able to advance the throttle and finally got my big motor started. Headed up river to just below buoy five. We caught five Burbot and another small walleye on both jigs and blade baits. Finally we moved to just upriver of buoy five and caught another Burbot and another Walleye both on blades. I also caught about a 5lb Whitefish on a blade, surprised the heck out of me. Took a photo and released it. Headed down river and back to the launch. The launch was icy but we had no probems getting my boat out. It never got above freezing and the water temp was between 35.5 and 36.7. Red jig with a Goby or Robo worm produced best. Blade bait in perch or trout color was also productive. I love winter fishing but it can be very frustrating at times. And at least no body died, which by the way has happened before at the Porcupine launch. MS

What color were the walleye? Were they gold and full of color or were they silver/white?

Most were pretty light colored, possibly because all were caught in about 50' of water. We did catch one that had tooth marks all along its sides, obviously it was attacked by a much larger fish but got away. Would have been nice to catch that fish. I uploaded the picture of the whitefish with the report but it didn't show up, I have a 50/50 record at best when trying to attach pictures here. None of the walleyes were worthy of a photo, but they were worthy of being eaten.
