I got a chance to go do some white fish fishing with my good friends Gordy and Wally of Yakima just below the Priest Rapids Dam on the Columbia Wendsday afternoon. I had caught some whitefish on the Yakima river last year and through the Ice at Soda Lake in the past, but drifting egg pattern flies in the current was a totally new concept for me. The morning was brisk and overcast as the 3 of us settled in and began our drift fishing presentations. I struggled at first as both my buddies put a half dozen whitefish on the bank in what seemed like no time. I finally realized what I was doing wrong by watching Gordy take up his slack immediately after the cast and i was soon in to the fish! We ended up catching 18 jumbo keepers in the nest 3 hours and had many more to the bank that got off. Orange egg pattern flies seemed to be the color the fish were keying on. Thanks again Gordy for an awesome morning on the water. Jiggy
