Headed out to Porcupine Bay today to see if we could get some Walleye. Headed downstream first for about four miles and then trolled wedding rings + a night crawler with a bottom bouncer for a while with only one small eye coming in, which we released. We then decided to go about four miles upstream from the launch and had about the same luck.

After a while of trolling and here and there doing some jigging with only two small walleye caught, we decided to head back to the area across from the launch, where the rock slide was a few years ago. We started trolling some crankbaits in 15-20 feet of water and started hitting them consistently. We ended the day with 5 walleye for the pan and 4 being released.

Bassmaster: I've had the same experience up around Porcupine; just seems spotty this year after the spawn. We did OK with crankbaits (shad rap, perch, rainbow rap etc.) but nothing exciting or anything of size...20" was the largest. What cranks were you using?

I am also curious what cranks were you using. :)

We didn't have any very big ones, either, just in the 12-16 inch range. The biggest producer was a Cotton Cordell Grappler Shad in perch color, diving to around 10-15 feet. The other crank that did okay was a small jointed Rapala in a brown color. We had found one spot about a quarter mile long that was continuously producing fish, but anywhere past that there were little to no bites, so we just trolled back and forth through this one stretch.

We've had the same experience there also. My wife had just a jig and a worm on and we were slowly drifting the same area. At that time there was a line of weeds and we were just on the outer edge of it at 13'. She would get bit on every pass but I wouldn't on the opposite side of the boat. Turn around and go back and then I'd get hit on the way back. We figured they were back in the weeds and then coming out to nail the bait. When the sun popped over the hill everything stopped. Verrrry selective
