Greetings from Captain Dave's guide service. I am reporting to you from the Brewster pool where I have fished 16 of the last 19 days. In those 16 days we have landed 30 chinook and 398 sockeye salmon. Yesterday was one of our best days landing 48 sockeye and one hatchery Chinook.
I can tell you a few things about the Brewster pool. The good news is the weather is not so hot, and the number of boats is slowly shrinking. The bad news is the number of fish in the pool is also getting smaller. For the average angler fishing has been pretty poor. Lots of boats are boating only one or two Sockeye a day. The concentration of fish is not nearly what it was two weeks ago. The biters seem to be concentrated to fewer and fewer locations. For those of us who have it dialed in we are still getting limits but have to work harder at it each day. The condition of the fish are excellent. Skin color is bright and shiny and the flesh is a brilliant red. These tasty little fish are worth every ounce of effort I put into catching them.
I have been catching most of my fish between 20 and 30 feet trolling at 1.3 miles an hour. Rather than using a downrigger, I have been pulling 4 to 6 ounces of lead 3 feet ahead of a 0 dodger. Smaller presentations seem to be working better these days. I suggest getting rid of the Hoochie. Shrimp is a must but no other scents or sauces are needed. Also I only use half a piece of shrimp unless you are using really small shrimp. Good luck to you all.
I will continue fishing the Brewster pool until the fishing slows down to a point where I cannot provide a good service for my guests. I have several more openings this month and several more into August. I had my first NWFR guests on the Friday and had a blast. Heather even taught me how to make the fish bite. We used the same tactic the next day and Karen whacked out a limit using Heathe'rs technique. The first dates I have available are July 22, 23rd, and the 24th. Feel free to contact me if you are interested. My fall Chinook trips start September 1st. You can also receive daily updates via my Facebook page.
