This is a combined report for February 16-17th, 2016. The Blue Hoochie finally made it back to Roosevelt after all the December excitement we had on our first trip. Word travels quick and with better weather when we arrived at the Keller launch at about 8:30 on the 16th there were already 17 other boats in the water. Everyone was heading up stream. I think this is where we made our first major mistake.
I thought we would be able to round up at least a few fish down by the bluffs again so that is where we started, downstream not upstream. A local in Wilbur even told us there was a hot bite up by Hansen Harbor but we didn't listen to him or reports coming from this site. After about a hour and no fish and very little if nothing on the sonar, we decided to explore and run downstream to Swawilla. Gave that a try for about a hour with no luck then decided what the heck, we are already this far down lake, might as well just go on down to Spring Canyon. Did a troll from Pine Tree almost down to the dam and back. On the way back we brought in a side planer rod and "Caught," or rather "dragged," in a small rainbow. That ended up being the only fish for the day. Tried a couple more spots in the Swawilla basin on the way back, then by the bluffs again, with nothing to show. Almost ten hours of fishing with one small rainbow, definitely an ego check compared to the last trip. The only benefit is I learned the lake a little better.
On to day two. Super Sunday. I think I need to make fishing the morning of Superbowl a habit. Decided the second biggest mistake I made the day before was not concentrating on one area and finding fish, we knew they had to be there, so we went straight to Spring Canyon and stayed put. Arrived at the launch around 7 with nine or ten boats already in the water. Really concentrated on the area around pine tree and with an east wind the forage was just stacked up on the east side of the point and we marked many large schools of what I am assuming to be kokanee.
As we were passing a small jon boat with three guys and a dog in it (crazy!), they were telling us they just hit big schools and caught fish on the east side of the point and what do you know, we double up as we are talking to them! Love it when that happens. It felt so good to get some fish in the boat after spending so much time the day before fishing for nothing. We trolled down towards the dam again and hooked a nice, but skinny, native rainbow that we released. Just as it was getting time to go to get home for the game we ended up TRIPLING again right out in front of Pine Tree in about 180 feet of water completing our kokanee limit, thank the lord. It was a windy cold day, but at least sunny and we got our limit ending on a positive note.
Methods were similar to the last report with more colors and styles thrown in including plugs and apex type lures, but on the first day I tried running yellow bird planer boards. I am wondering if this is part of my lack of success. The second day I went back to downriggers and straight long lining. It seemed to work, and again the long line with the orange Kekeda produced 3 out of the 6 fish we caught. Considering we only had one long line and two downrigger rods that's double the catch rate. Anyway, we are supposed to head up again this weekend if the weather cooperates and if the downriggers aren't producing so well might go to all long lines. Thanks again to everyone who keeps us up to date on Roosevelt and hope to see you up there. I'm pretty shy so if you see us please say hello! Tight lines to all.
