Kokanee fever struck again! Can't seem to ignore those Monsta fish at Roosevelt. Captain Dave called and wanted to go down Sunday afternoon....afternoon? Are you kidding those fish don't bite in the afternoon! Wrong...
Left town about 2:00 PM and headed to the lower end of the lake for a 3:45 arrival. Started fishing a half hour later after marking fish in the 70' range. Got the first hit shortly and it was a rainbow in the 1' size released this year from the net pens. I became the rainbow champion getting several on the gear I normally get the kokes on; some version of a pink uv glow hoochie.
Dave on the other hand was running a custom green spinner rig and dodger and was getting bit by the fabulous Roosevelt kokes we have become so spoiled by this year. I made changes and finally got my rigs catching kokes too. One of the things Dave does is use 2 colors lead core and stacks on the downrigger with both releases at the back of the ball! The lead core is on the bottom and the top release is about 30" long. The upper rod uses a Mack's Double Dodger set to run out to the side. No tangles amazing; with the presentations running about 10' apart in depth.
We caught fish steadily and to our surprise we caught some small kokes around a foot long that were clipped.....the first ever for Dave and me!! Maybe the triploid kokes they planted?
Had friend Tom with us too and we needed two fish to fill out the 6 koke limit on the Monstas. Moved locations about the time the sun was low in the sky, 8PM or so. Found some more kokes along with a lot of dirty water and debris but managed to catch one more. Now it was getting late and with all of the floating wood we did not to run in the dark so decided to troll a little further to get the last one...one rod went off and then the second. Holy mackerel a double for the last one. The extra fish was released unharmed and we arrived at the dock just before dark. What a great afternoon and evening we had!
Many thanks Captain Dave for another great trip and a few tricks added to the Kokanee arsenal. Give Captain Dave a call if you would like to book a trip for some of the Roosevelt Monstas. His number is (509) 939-6727

You're killing me, we tried Thursday, but only managed an 18" bow and a half dozen or so planters. Great report Alan!
