My wife and I decided on Saturday that we would wake up early Sunday morning and head down to the mouth of the klickitat river and try for some fall kings. That plan went to the wayside when we both decided to sleep in instead. My wife still wanted to go fishing but I told her it was way to late to make the trip to Lyle. She then suggested we go to vernita and give it a try. I told her no way and that it was way to early for vernita. But she kept on pestering me so finally I gave in. We left Moxee around 9am and arrived at vernita at 9:40.
There were several vehicles there and while launching my boat, noticed a few filleted kings. We went straight to the king hole and saw a few boats there so we started trolling 12oz cannon balls with a pro troll flasher and superbaits (rotten banana and hotter tamale). Didn't get any takedowns nor did we see any of the other boaters catch anything. We gave up with the king hole after about 1 1/2 hours of trying and decided to head up river and try back trolling. Switched to jet divers with pro troll flashers and same superbaits and it was fish on. Immediately I got a takedown on my rod but it spit the hook after maybe 10 seconds of tugging. Than my wife got a takedown and first king in the boat. Nice 15 pounder. Than I get a takedown. Another 15 pounder in the boat. She gets the next fish and it's a gorgeous chrome king that goes in the box. Our final takedown happened to be a steelhead which was released unharmed.
So 5 takedowns, 4 fish to the boat and 3 kings in the box. It was a good day.
